  • Implementing Sheltered Instruction is a blended learning opportunity, meaning that a combination of face-to-face sessions and online learning will occur. This course is designed for classroom teachers. In order to effectively design and deliver high quality instruction for culturally and linguistically diverse students, teachers must have command of foundational concepts including second language acquisition, culture and sheltered instruction. Over the course of the year, we will build and deepen understanding of these foundational pieces with specific focus on: how students learn a language for school and what teachers can do to understand and support this development; information, concepts, and research pertaining to educating ELs; cultural information and the impacts of culture on learning; use of sheltered instruction practices and strategies to support language development and content learning; language proficiency levels and using state assessment data to enhance SIOP implementation and differentiate for language proficiency.
